20 Feet From Stardom is an inspiring, heart-wrenching film about those unsung heroines known as backup or background singers.  It takes us behind the scenes with a dozen or so of the brilliant and fiercely dedicated African-American women who propelled 20th-century soul and rock-&-roll bands to success.

Watching it left me pondering that famous line of Andy Warhol’s:  “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.”  One of the film’s most sobering stretches is a parade of album covers celebrating the launch of one great backup singer after another into her long-awaited solo career.  Most of them sank without a ripple.

Warhol’s observation has popped into my head lately like the mystical answer from a Magic 8-Ball as I’ve read the newest data about traditional publishing vs. self-publishing, author expectations vs. author satisfaction.  It’s a remark so often quoted and misquoted that it’s become a cliche–verbal Muzak we don’t really hear anymore.  Back in 1968, when it first spread through the so-called counterculture, it struck shivers into me and many other aspiring artists, like an eerily prescient fortune cookie.

Already the news media were transforming the nature of fame.  (Media was still plural then; so was data.)  We had thought of fame as a magic doorway or bridge: Once you reached it, you were IN.  Work really hard, be true to your heart and your craft, and you’ll arrive.  Then you can sit back and relax, as the airlines say, and live happily ever after.

A number of people who boarded the gravy train early still believe this.  20 Feet From Stardom is a powerful reminder that for most striving artists, whose talent and hard work aren’t boosted by a well-timed lucky break, it’s not that simple.

Over the next 45 years, as lifelong careers and even regular paying jobs thinned out, and more and more people turned to arts, sports, and entrepreneurship, success changed. Instead of a threshold you can cross into the Emerald City, it became a benchmark–a one-night motel along the Yellow Brick Road.  Congratulations, you’ve arrived!  Now, move on down the road.The Emerald City

Three recent reports from Digital Book World and Writer’s Digest emphasize what a challenge this redefinition poses for writers (and publishers) of books.

In the fall of 2013, a DBW article by lead writer and Queens College sociologist Dana Beth Weinberg announced an ironic finding.  Whether an author is self-published, traditionally published, or both (“hybrid”), s/he is dissatisfied with the results.  Regarding “everything from the royalty rates hybrid authors receive when they traditionally publish (7.9% are very satisfied) to the number of copies sold by self-publishing authors (4.6% are very satisfied), authors are generally unhappy.”  Those whose books are traditionally published tend to believe they’d have done better if they had self-published; while self-published authors think their books would have done better if traditionally published.  The grass is greener on the other side of the fence?  More like: Hey!  I ran a great race, led the pack across the finish line . . . Where’s my trophy?

In December, Weinberg reported that income remains a big source of dissatisfaction.  The much-touted Cinderella stories of authors such as Lisa Genova, E.L. James, and Gillian Flynn remain fairy tales for the vast majority of book writers.  “Few authors are getting rich off of their writing or even earning enough from their writing to quit their day jobs.”

This past week, Weinberg unveiled findings from the 2014 Digital Book World and Writer’s Digest Survey regarding authors’ expectations: “Authors, especially not-yet-published authors, believe that publishers will provide us with market expertise and distributional reach that we don’t have on our own and that we have greater chances of reaching fans and stardom if we go the traditional route.”  As the previous survey data show, however, fans and stardom remain elusive no matter how a book is published.

At the same time, all over the online network I’m hearing from writers who’ve had a modest hit or two and hope for another one soon, as well as writers who, while not famous, are earning enough from their books to keep the wolf from the door.  Most of these are either self-help/how-to authors or series authors of genre fiction: mystery, romance, thrillers.

A leitmotif in 20 Feet from Stardom is that talent and commitment aren’t enough to make a star; it also takes a powerful ego, ambition, and tenacity, bolstered by good luck.  For writers, the democratization of self-publishing is luck that cuts both ways.  While it has granted many an aspirant’s wish to see her or his words between covers (literal or digital), it’s also swamped the market: In 2012 alone, more than 390,000 new books were published.  In the 21st century, how many writers will show the combination of genius, ferocity, and timing to blast out of the shadows into the spotlight?

How do you define success for yourself?  Will you be frustrated and disappointed as long as there are other writers who earn more fame and money than you do?  Is it satisfying enough to see your words in print, and to know that people you’ve never met are paying to read them?

The backup singers in 20 Feet From Stardom all talk about the thrill of making great music and the synergy of collaboration, even if they’d rather be the star up front.  For 21st-century writers, the most probable and practical approach to success may be to enjoy surfing each wave of recognition when it rolls in, large or small, and then enjoy the hard work of paddling out of sight with the rest of the crowd until the next wave rises.

Barbary Corsairs in the Regency?!?

redcoats1If you saw my previous post “The Regency Abroad,” you’ll recall my rereading Jane Austen and wondering: Who are these “officers” who keep popping up, turning young ladies’ heads, and then marching off again?

When His Royal Highness Prince George took the sove-reins from his ailing father and launched the Regency, his country was at war. (Britain was often at war. It’s an island. Like Manhattan, it depends heavily on imports.) Ever since the French Revolution had paved the way for Napoleon to become Emperor, things were prickly across the Channel.

USmapRegencyNor had Britain forgiven Spain for the Armada, as well as continuing to meddle in the New World. The Americans had booted the Brits out of their former colonies. When Napoleon sold France’s vast Louisiana Territory to the newly United States in 1803, that left only Spain on the south end of the East Coast, hanging onto Florida. On the north end, Canada remained British.

Thus the War of 1812. The U.S. had a vision of stretching from sea to sea, but at this point, that meant from the Gulf of Mexico (we want Spain out of Florida!) to Hudson Bay (we want Britain out of Canada!).

LBB-2014-AReThe British thought it would be nicer if they kept Canada and also got back into Florida. They made friends with the Spanish. They tried to make friends with the Louisiana Bayou buccaneers. That’s the back story for my “Regency Rakes & Rebels” romance Lady Barbara & the Buccaneer.

But America was a minor distraction. Why had Napoleon sold Louisiana? To fund his invasion of Britain. (See “The Regency Abroad.”)

Napoleon was a steamroller on land, but in the English Channel (La Manche, from his side) and on the Mediterranean Sea, he was no match for the Royal Navy. Still, it took years to prove that.

corsair-figsCroptIt also took some help from the Barbary Corsairs.

The Afghan-American writer Tamim Ansary has written a terrific book, Destiny Disrupted, which describes in detail how the mainly Christian world and the mainly Muslim world cohabited. Switching for a moment to the Muslims’ point of view: Europe was a little peninsula, Britain a tiny faraway island. The center of the world–culture, commerce, civilization–was the Maghreb and the Levant. That’s roughly the area which today’s Westerners call North Africa and the Middle East.

Dotted along the northern rim of the Maghreb were major ports such as Tunis, Algiers, and Tripoli. Collectively, this was the Barbary Coast, so called for the Berbers who lived there. The ruler of each port collected fees from other local shippers, from Europeans, and also from the corsairs–the Mediterranean version of buccaneers.

Barbarossa_Hayreddin_PashaThe corsairs’ heyday ended two centuries before the Regency era. Its central figure, Hayreddin Barbarossa, started as a pirate and wound up a pasha, thanks to his naval victories for the Ottoman Empire.

During the Napoleonic Wars, France’s blockade of Britain opened up a new market for corsairs. Naval battles were the gentlemanly way for the Brits to win control of the northern Mediterranean. But why overlook the usefulness of freelancers? The need to capture enemy ships and their cargo created a new generation of corsairs.

And that is the back story for my new “Regency Rakes & Rebels” romance, working title Lady Caroline & the Corsair, due out the first of February!

Last-Minute Gift Shopping? Give an E-Book!

goldilocks-and-3-bears460Still wondering how to fill those gaps in your Christmas gift list? Now that books come in so many different forms and genres, a book is more than ever the ideal stocking-stuffer. For your loved ones who favor digital bookshelves, how about an e-book?

Is there a way to give an e-book as a gift?

Of course there is!  Would Amazon leave a potentially lucrative shopping gap unfilled?  In “How to Give an E-Book as a Gift,” Sharon Vaknin of CNET outlines the procedure now commonly called “gifting” for your loved ones who read on Nook, Kindle, iPad, or Android devices.  It’s a story reminiscent of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”:

  • Amazon, the experts at making everything easy for everybody, has a “Give as a Gift” button which lets you either send your chosen book directly to your chosen recipient, or print out a voucher to wrap and/or send.
  • Barnes & Noble will let you buy a Nook book as a gift if you open an account.
  • iTunes and Google+ have no procedure for gift books; however, you can buy a gift card and enclose a book suggestion with it.

Smashwords and Kobo aren’t covered by Vaknin’s article, but trust the ever-flexible Smashwords to enable easy gift-giving.  On Smashwords you can give an e-book in almost any e-format, however old, new, or obscure.  Just find the book you want, click on the title, and click the “Give as a Gift” button.  Your recipient will need to open a free Smashwords account to pick up the book; that done, s/he can open or download it on any device from a phone to a computer.  Full details here.

Kobo doesn’t have a specific gift-book procedure but will let you give a gift card which the recipient can redeem online.

And if your taste is retro, remember that the US Postal Service this year charges $5.80 for delivery within 1-3 days of a Priority Mail envelope or small (5.25″ x 8.5″) box of any weight.  When they ask you if your package contains anything hazardous, say Yes!  It’s a book!

revolver-bullet-tiny“The price readers pay for books is at an all-time low, thanks to ebooks and…aggressive discounting tactics,” reports Jeremy Greenfield in Forbes. “The average price of a best-selling ebook today is $5.27.

revolver-bullet-tinyThat stomping sound is Amazon’s new giant step toward dominating the entertainment market: Amazon Instant Video.  For $79 per year (less than the cost of Netflix), Amazon Prime members already got book discounts, free book loans, and free multi-product shipping. Now they can also stream movies and TV shows, including Amazon-generated productions, a new enterprise bound to burgeon in 2014 and beyond.
Worth noting: only Kindle and Apple mobile devices can download Amazon Instant Video, although there are apps for bridging the gap to competitors’ tablets and phones.phone

The result is that in a very short time there have become twice as many mobile users as PC users,” reports  Digital Book World’s Thad McIlroy, citing Benedict Evans’s “Mobile is Eating the World.”  One key takeaway for McIlroy is that “a marketing strategy that runs paper to desktop to mobile has become a traffic jam. Try mobile, desktop and then paper.”

The other takeaway circles back to our previous e-pistols: In the worldwide battle for consumers, the winner will be whoever gives them what they think they want at the fastest speed and cheapest price.  Amazon is contemplating a rosy future.  Authors, maybe not so much, except for those happy few who snagged a seat in this game of Musical Chairs before the viral spread of self-publishing and Amazon.

Joe Konrath & Barry Eisler remain aggressively bullish on the new age of democracy in publishing.  Who’s right?  Time will tell.  But it’s been a long time since the last best-seller out of nowhere.

At the Online Crossroads of Bitcoins, Crowdfunding, & Murder

And will s/he be assassinated before the movie comes out?

Meet The ‘Assassination Market’ Creator Who’s Crowdfunding Murder With Bitcoins is a chilling report:

…Last month I received an encrypted email from someone calling himself by the pseudonym Kuwabatake Sanjuro, who pointed me towards his recent creation: The website Assassination Market, a crowdfunding service that lets anyone anonymously contribute bitcoins towards a bounty on the head of any government official–a kind of Kickstarter for political assassinations. According to Assassination Market’s rules, if someone on its hit list is killed–and yes, Sanjuro hopes that many targets will be–any hitman who can prove he or she was responsible receives the collected funds.suit-tie-target

Greenberg tells us that top targets–prominent figures who’ve already had bitcoins pledged toward their murder–include President Barack Obama and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.  Sanjuro’s goal is ‘to destroy “all governments everywhere”‘ by triggering the deaths of so many politicians that no one dares to hold office.

‘“I am a crypto-anarchist,” Sanjuro concludes. “We have a bright future ahead of us.”’

Sanjuro chose his name partly in “homage to creator of the online black market Silk Road, who called himself the Dread Pirate Roberts.”  Back in September, Greenberg wrote a parallel story about Roberts and his illicit empire, “the Web’s busiest bazaar for heroin, methamphetamines, crack, cocaine, LSD, ecstasy and enough strains of marijuana to put an Amsterdam coffee shop to shame.”  Although it was busted not long after appearing in Forbes, “Roberts’ eBay-like service was grossing $1.2 million a month in the first half of 2012” and subsequently “doubled its product listings.”  Ironically, Silk Road was a job-creator for the U.S. government, keeping not only the FBI busy but also the Postal Service, which delivered the company’s vacuum-sealed products.

Book_knifeFor a publisher like Boom-Books, which specializes in Mystery, Romance, & International Intrigue, the “virtualization” of large-scale crime has staggering implications.  On the one hand, can a vivid action novel be written about skulduggery which in multiple senses is invisible?  Drugs and violent death are tangible; bitcoins and the extremely secretive Tor network (on which both these enterprises operate) exist only as code.

On the other hand, what is the responsibility of authors and publishers toward the larger community?  How do we define that community in a world that increasingly is both international and virtual?  Where is the line between utilizing material, capitalizing on someone else’s crimes, and enabling or even encouraging those crimes?

This is far from the first time we’ve been faced with these questions, but never before have the answers had such potentially vast and grave consequences.

Kobo, iTunes, B&N: What Are they Best For?

GoldRushstoreIn the 21st-century publishing Gold Rush, as in Gold Rushes past, most of the riches don’t go to the miners, but to the entrepreneurs who sell to the miners. That’s why enough online book-services companies have popped up in the past decade to fill a phone book. (Remember phone books?)

Once upon a time, book fans wondered:  Can Apple can beat out bookstackAmazon? Is Kobo the Canadian Amazon? Will B&N leap into the gap left by Borders before Amazon fills it? Now it’s a hot race for second place. (Remember Lulu?) In our guerrilla sector of the book biz, the FAQ are:  Which of these competitors are most useful to us and our customers? What are their distinctive features? How are readers, writers, and publishers utilizing them?

Thus began a nonscientific investigation, whose findings are reported here with the hope that you’ll add your own data.  This week we look at three big competitors in book creation and distribution.  Later we’ll explore book social media, e.g., Twitter and Goodreads.

No_Girls_Allowed_3While Amazon defined itself as the universal online marketplace, Apple chose the Secret Clubhouse approach. Want to be in with the In Crowd? Join the iTeam! Apple’s edge is in design, innovation, and quality of products. Where are they focusing their publishing energy? On iBooks Author, the first platform that let anybody with an iPad build a professional-looking full-color illustrated book. Which can be bought and/or enjoyed by anyone else with an iPad. No outsiders allowed.

We at Boom-Books wish Apple would develop Pages. This excellent program lets anybody apple-store-nywith a Mac easily format a book, and then export it in the semi-universal EPUB format to any e-publishing platform (except Amazon’s Kindle). Coupled with the expert help available at Apple Stores, Pages could be the go-to program for indie and self-publishers. But letting iUsers publish elsewhere would open a gate Apple prefers to keep shut. Yet their own e-publishing arm is not user-friendly. It’s much easier to finagle a book into iTunes (an odd channel for book sales) via an aggregator such as Smashwords than via Apple.

A Barnes and Noble book store is shown here in Encinitas May 20, 2008Barnes & Noble hamstrung itself right out of the starting gate by giving each part of its book operation a different (and less than catchy) name. To read a B&N e-book, you need a Nook. To publish a book with B&N, until recently you had to use the inelegantly titled PubIt! The newer Nook mini-tablets actually are fine e-readers, which can be picked up cheap these days since B&N is dropping them. Alas for the company’s future, one of these devices’ best features is their Android operating system and full access to Google, including Google Books and Google Play (also an odd channel for book sales–but more on that another time).

Kobo started as the Canadian Amazon, building its own e-readers and selling books. Now, kobo-nycalthough Japanese-owned, it’s finding a niche as the ally of independent American bookstores in their defensive battle against the giant. An indie bookstore hosts a Kobo kiosk; if a reader opens a Kobo account on the bookshop’s website, the shop gets a percentage of sales to that reader.  Kobo’s newest round of tablets, large and small, claim to be optimized for reading. It’s their stand with the good guys, though, that may be their strongest selling point. Amazon seems to think so: it’s just launched a competing program called Source. So far, indie bookstores are not falling over themselves to sign up. News reports on Source tend to include the phrase “Faustian bargain.”
