San Francisco writer CJ Verburg is best known as a playwright and theater director, and for her best-selling books including Ourselves Among Others and The Environmental Predicament (as Carol J. Verburg). For her specialties and background as an editor, see her LinkedIn profile.
A friend and neighbor of the late artist and author Edward Gorey, CJ produced twenty-odd of his original theatrical pieces on Cape Cod. Edward Gorey On Stage is her multimedia memoir about their adventures. Croaked: an Edgar Rowdey Cape Cod Mystery started as one of their frequent idées du jour over lunch, and morphed after his death into an affectionate tribute. Its anagrammatically eponymous sleuth and his small-town comrades reappear in Zapped: an Edgar Rowdey Cape Cod Mystery. CJ’s other mystery series follows Cory Goodwin, the Boston journalist daughter of NY detective Archie Goodwin, as she tracks an ex-rock star around France (Another Number for the Road) and delves into the noir side of science publishing (Silent Night Violent Night).
Spin, or Twilight of the Bohemians was a winner of Ashland New Plays Festival (October 2011) and Centenary Stage Company’s Women Playwrights Series (April 2012). Read about Spin and the ANPF in the Ashland Daily Tidings.
Lady Day in Love, at San Francisco’s Fellowship Theatre Guild (summer 2006), starred local/international jazz diva Kim Nalley as Billie Holiday. With Lady Sunrise, Ed Gillies, and T. Hall.
Dear Carol—I am in the middle of Croaked….picturing the places around Yarmouthport—missing Jack’s Outback where Mr. Gorey would breakfast.
We had friends down the highway in Yarmouthport and would visit during the summers.
Loved the huge tree at the side of the house, all the collectables around, the cats, when they turned his home into a museum—(hope that he would approve).
Thank you for a nostalgically(such a word?) good read!

Alice, I’m glad you and Croaked found each other! Thanks for letting me know. If you feel like it, please mention the book on Goodreads or Amazon or any other readers’ site you like — nowadays it’s amazingly hard for books to connect with the readers who’ll appreciate them. I’m working on the sequel, Zapped. Meanwhile, you might also enjoy “Edward Gorey On Stage,” which just came out in paperback (it’s also an e-book).
Hello Carol,
I had the pleasure of meeting you at Marlee’s Blue Angels party this summer in San Francisco, you were very modest just casually mentioning that you were into theater, and a little writing, and me saying how much I love the theater. Now I am really impressed and rapidly becoming a great fan. I am sitting here in Changmia Thailand, trying to turn off the sights and sounds, and I am beginning to find Croaked, a fun pleasant relief from the endless shopping ventures. Thank’s for the pleasant discovery, I think my next trip will have to Cape Cod
All the best,
Patrick
Patrick, good to hear from you! I’ve wondered where your fascinating travels were taking you. Thailand–wonderful! I’m so pleased you’re enjoying Croaked. Just the nudge I needed to trade North Beach’s holiday party scene for the grindstone, where Zapped is waiting. Happy end of the year in whichever time zone you’re in by then– Carol
